Fogclan apprentice New-Leaf brought changes to Fogclan; the changes were not as extreme as they were in Ridge or Poppy, but changes nonetheless. What remained of the last season’s snow melted across the moss-coated landscape, gathering in pools and joining together in a slow trickle towards the nearest brooks. The brooks became streams, streams to rivers, and rivers to grand, thundering waterfalls. Cloudpaw looked up at the waterfall with a dull, unimpressed expression. There used to be a novelty any territory outside of the camp, one that would make his kitten eyes widen with awe. Not so much anymore. As he continued his journey through apprenticeship, the incredible variety of Fogclan’s terrain wore out to banal, everyday locations. Wet rocks, check. Wet logs, check. Wet clump of ferns? Check. A thick layer of mist lingered in the air like a heavy blanket, dewdrops forming on the tips of his fur. He promptly shook them off, ears flapping against his head in sudden movement— an action he’d repeat every now and again as he trekked alongside Shadesplash. He followed the older cat across a path of smoothened river cobble, each of the rocks a different hue of browns and grayish-blues. The two took a path familiar to Cloudpaw, (he couldn’t recall if it was for a hunt or patrol, he was too busy not paying attention), and he found himself feeling a bit more apathetic than usual. Maybe it was because his bedding was too moist last night, or that the fish he ate this morning tasted a bit off, but Cloudpaw was in a mood. He glanced over at Shadespash. “Can we go back already? Or at least somewhere cooler?” He yawned, tail flicking on the soft earth beneath him. plagueparchments

SHADESPLASH - FOGCLAN DEPUTYIt was a hunt. A hunt that Shadesplash had organized himself, one of many trials of different combinations of cats that the deputy had painstakingly put together. Evidently, he and Cloudpaw were not going to work well together in the short run, but it was too late to go back and change anything. Despite his misgivings, he knew he had to put on a friendly face for the apprentice. He remembered how stern his own mentor was, especially at the beginning. The familiarity of it all, however banal, brought comfort to Shadesplash. The same water was here for him every day. The plants came and went, but most were always there. The rocks would sometimes fall over each other as the current bashed them against each other. There was always a pink flower to put on his head, no matter what bush it came from. And there would always be plenty of fish. Shadesplash opened his mouth to speak, but took a minute to think over his words before responding to the young apprentice. He knew that he had a tendency to say whatever came to mind, but had to quell this quality in front of the younger cats. Instead, a heavy sigh came out as he dipped his head. He felt the dew cling to his fur as well, but didn't feel it necessary to shake it off just yet. The air was heavy around him, and the sky was gray with fog. Wonder if we can name the Clan after this stuff, Shadesplash thought. Instead of blowing up at the young apprentice, Shadesplash's gaze softened as he turned to look at him. "What's wrong with this?" he asked, dew coming off of his ear with a quick flick.

Cloudpaw was mid-ear scratch as Shadesplash asked his question. He paused, expression inscrutable and eyes slightly narrowed, with a hind leg raised next to his face. There wasn’t anything necessarily wrong with the waterfall; in a different scenario, Cloudpaw could even see himself bringing another cat here to show off his new swimming skills. Or just splashing around. “I dunno,” he answered very insightfully. He finally lowered his hind leg and sat up straight. “I’ve been doing this stuff for what, two moons?” He scoffed. Cloudpaw’s tone made this period of time sound a lot longer than it actually was. As all apprentices do, he was eager to distance himself from kithood and fit in with the other warriors. “I feel like everyone always brings me to the same area. This one, especially.” He padded ahead of Shadespash to dip his paw in the water, a single claw extended and lazily swirled around in circles, watching his reflection distort. If he was any brighter, he’d realize that plenty of fish gathered near the waterfall— the silver scales of minnows swimming in perfect synchronization glimmering in the sun, birds dipping down from the treetops for a drink, and the fins of larger species peeking above the surface, only to quickly dive back into the crisp mountain runoff. The moss-coated cobble provided plenty of traction for cats to dig their claws into as well, while the main section of the river flowed slow enough for even an elder to comfortably swim about. If he was any brighter, he’d realize this was the perfect spot for a beginner’s hunt.

SHADESPLASH - FOGCLAN DEPUTY"You don't know?" the deputy asked quizzically. He padded up towards the waterfall, looking in. Little minnows gathered about in the water here, swimming aimlessly in a small school above the smooth pebbles that dotted the river floor. His eyes lingered on them longer than he thought to, then he turned back to the young apprentice. Despite his sweet disposition, there was a tired look in his eyes.
"Why don't you take a look around here?" he suggested, gesturing to the waterfall. He let out a small sigh, he couldn't help it. "I originally wanted you to figure this out on your own, but I'll let you in on a little secret. There's plenty of prey here if you know where to look." He took a step back from the river, observing the apprentice.

Cloudpaw slowly dragged his head to the left, then right, all while keeping the rest of his body completely still, somehow still obeying Shadesplash’s suggestion in possibly the most annoying way he could. He reluctantly waded into a shallow, calm section of the pool. The water was clear enough to see through; the pebbles in various shades of grays and browns wiggled in the refraction of his movement, and a bit of the sandy river silt puffed up by his paws in a tan cloud. Then out shot a minnow. Cloudpaw knew he was already too late, but lunged anyways. Water splashed around violently as he dove forward, foam and bubbles swallowing him whole. His tail stuck out of the mess like a flag, thrashing wildly when he dug around the pool in quick bursts. When he resurfaced, soggy and ears folded, his mouth was empty. “Oh, I know!” He suddenly perked up, disappointment quickly fading, and a smile upturned on his muzzle for the first time since he left camp. “If I catch a fish, like one thiiiis big,” he held up a paw for effect, “—Can you take me somewhere really cool? Like the Serpent’s Run?” plagueparchments

SHADESPLASH - FOGCLAN DEPUTYIt was hard for Shadesplash to contain his excitement at the apprentice's revelation. The large tom's eyes lit up, and his tail started wagging as if he were a dog. He managed to contain himself, though, and a warm expression crossed the deputy's face.
"Oh, come on, it doesn't even need to be that big," Shadesplash laughed. "If you manage to catch a minnow, I'll take you somewhere cool. You have my word." He stood on the sidelines and watched as the apprentice trained in the water, trying to sit still but something was always moving. Be it his tail, his paws or his eyes, the large tom was practically unable to sit still.
