RAINWOLF
This should be a good spot, Rainwolf thought to himself.
The late morning sun rose over the mountains, chasing off the remaining traces of Leaf-bare chill. The walk here was brisk, though he never reached anything faster than a trot. They needed some prey to stick around for today's lesson, and it'd be a shame if he scared anything off for a later patrol. It was a decent enough stretch after a hearty breakfast of fresh prey. He had allowed Cougarpaw to sleep in a little bit today; although he was always the diligent type, he remembered how intense training was during the first moon in his apprenticeship. And with Cougarpaw's personality, he felt maybe it'd be best if today was an easier day.
To be apprenticed during Leaf-bare... well, at least Leaf-bare warriors meant good luck.
Rainwolf trained here as an apprentice. Pinespark, his former mentor, taught him all kinds of things here. How to hunt, what to do in a battle, all of the laws of the warrior code. And after he graduated, he helped other cats train their apprentices by allowing himself to be their opponent in spars. Not that he actually fought them... rather, he just let himself get all kinds of bruises and a couple of scratches here and there. And now, he had his own apprentice to pass on all that he learned. He intended to do his best, as usual. There was no way he'd let down his leader.
He glanced back at the young molly. This grove was perfect for battle training, given the soft soil and moss, but he figured it'd be too energy-draining. Clan history and the warrior code was something that even warriors needed refreshing on, but Rainwolf wanted it to be an easy day, not a boring one. And anyway, she still had a whole season and a half to figure those out. Before he spoke, he lifted his tail in a gesture that meant quiet.
“Today, we’re going to work on your tracking,” Rainwolf murmured with a passive flick of his ear. He would like it if they caught something, but there were more parts to hunting than chasing and delivering a kill bite. And if anything, I can make up the difference myself, he thought wearily. It’ll be fine. As long as she makes a little bit of progress every day.
“Take a moment to scent the air and tell me what you can smell.”
